Saturday Spending

I didn't make it to the grocery store this week (okay, that's not true. But the only thing I bought was cream, and it was for my science experiment not for me so it doesn't count). Next week I might not go to the store either, since I want to get all my perishables used up before I go camping. More on that later, though.

Sunday Storage

This week, I did pretty well. I've started in on the beans again (so expect to see a lot more bean recipes in the future) since they take up a lot of the storage I have, and they're good for you.

This week I used:

some of the lentils (I think I only have 1-2 cups of them left now)
1/2 pound red kidney beans
all the cake flour (for a pound cake to use the last of the blueberries and yogurt)

Saturday Spending

I seem to be having a lot of trouble getting myself to the store lately. I'm not really considering that to be a bad thing, since it results in me using more storage. But I don't know how well that'd work for the average person. This week, I only managed to get groceries at all because I had to leave my house for medicine, but I did get it done. Anyway, this is what I spent (where I went a few cents over because I was thinking about being sick and not about money/budget):

$2.78 - romaine hearts (3)
$3.18 - Hebrew National hotdogs
$1.98 - triscuits
$0.63 - can corn
$0.30 - ramen
$2.08 - cocktail onions
$1.58 - banana peppers
$0.63 - canned diced tomatoes
$0.50 - canned stewed tomatoes
$2.12 - salsa
$3.89 - eye of round (1.25 pounds)
$0.44 - cucumber

total: $20.11 (I went over 11 cents, due to all the meat)

Food Waste Friday

I've had a pretty good run here lately. A lot of what I've been doing to keep my food waste down is to simply recycle leftovers into new meals (not that y'all haven't noticed this already). By keeping track of what's in my fridge that needs to be used up, it's easy to integrate leftovers into new meals.

So, for the third week in a row, I wasted:

Stewed Red Beans with Ham

I'm still sick, but I ate all my soup. So I made this instead. It'd have been a lot lazier of a meal if I'd simply used canned beans. But instead I used dried. You use canned. Anyway, it's got meat in it and lots more nutrition, plus a bit of heat to help me sweat out whatever's ailing me. Hope you enjoy!

2 cans of kidney beans, drained and rinsed (or 1/2 pound dried and cooked)
1 can corn, juices included
1 can stewed tomatoes, juices included, but tomatoes mashed up a touch with your spoon
1/4 - 1/2 pound diced ham
1/8 teaspoon cayenne
1/4 teaspoon thyme
1 teaspoon dried cilantro (or a tablespoon fresh)
salt and pepper to taste

Combine all in a pot and stew for an hour. Serve over rice or pasta, if you like. Serves 4.

Still don't know where my camera is. Sorry guys.
