Bison

I spent a wonderful 25 minutes on the phone w/ Hugh from Thunder Heart Bison today. We had a great time chatting and have made agreements to swap recipes for meat. I plan to ask him next time I talk to him if it would be permissible (sp) for me to go along to view and/or help w/ the next slaughtering and butchering process. It's very important to me to know everything about the act of taking a living animal and turning it into food.

Austin Farmer's Market

On last Saturday (Jule 2nd), I did a presentation for the Austin Farmer's market. While I am accustomed to speaking to groups of smaller than 10, this was a lot of people and I was a bit nervous. The theme was "Picnic in the Park," so in line w/ this, my recipes were melon w/ fig-infused vinegar and honey, and a seared bison sandwich. They both seemed to come out pretty well, and the audience looked like they enjoyed the food. And they laughed at my jokes, which you really can't beat. I'm not normally funny to anyone but myself, so I appreciated that they got my sense of humor. Anyway, while I was really nervous at first, once everything got underway I relaxed and had a really great time w/ it. I was surprised by how much fun it was!! Andrew, the project manager, asked if I'd be interested in doing it again in the fall. I most certainly would enjoy it. It's great for exposure and it's SO much fun!!

Starting out

Hi. I'm not intending to say anything substantial, enlightening or deep in any way (although if it happens, feel free to ignore it). It's just a place for the meanderings of my little brain, odd things I see along the way I want to make note of, or ... probably things about food, since that's mostly what I'm thinking about at any given moment. It's just a thought-dump space for me. Here's a starting thought - I hope this guy is successful in his endeavours. He's quite funny and brings to light his concerns about the way our country is headed in an entertaining and endearing fashion. I think he aptly makes the point that while it's a great thing to believe in whatever you wish, it's quite another to create legislation to enforce your belief that everyone should agree w/ you.
